Mathigon’s Polypad is a collection of interactive digital manipulatives. It is designed for tablets, desktop computers as well as interactive smartboards, and can be used by teachers and individual students.
Simply drag one of the shapes from the sidebar onto the canvas. You can tap on shapes to select them and move them around, and you can rotate one or more shapes using the circular handle. On desktops, you can use the SHIFT key to select more than one shape at once and the C key to create a copy of all selected shapes.
The toolbar at the bottom of the screen contains a pen for free-hand drawing, an eraser for removing strokes and shapes, a protractor for measuring angles, and a colour picker for changing pen stroke and tile colours. Use the text tool to create labels, and double-click an existing text element to edit its value.
Shapes automatically snap to each others’ corners. If you select a background grid using the button in the bottom-left corner, shapes will instead snap to the lines of the grid. When rotating, angles will snap to line up a shape’s edges with nearly edges.
Polypad is fully keyboard accessible. In addition to standard tab events to cycle through buttons and tiles, we support these keyboard shortcuts:
When selecting a number tile grid, you have the option to break them up into individual tiles, or to combine multiple tiles into a single grid. The right handle allows you to change their width: this can be useful for visualising how numbers can be factorised.
When selecting a fraction bar, you can also break it up into individual tiles. The right handle allows you to change the number of fraction tiles that are visible.
